Alan Shearer has taken to The Sun to heap praise upon Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker rewrote the record books in Spurs’ win over Southampton on Boxing Day, and suggested one area that he has seen the Englishman improve in over the last 12 months.

Kane went into Spurs’ clash with the Saints on 36 Premier League goals for the calendar year, and was one goal behind Lionel Messi’s tally of 54 goals for club and country in 2017.

However, he ensured that he ended the year on top of both lists, with a hat-trick against Southampton inspiring Mauricio Pochettino’s side to a 5-2 win. “Kane truly can do it all on the pitch and is a role model off it,” he told The Sun. “He can score with both feet, his head, from close range and distance.

“One big improvement I have noticed in the last 12 months is how much quicker he is as well.”

It certainly appears to be too late for Tottenham to put together a title challenge in the league this season, but there is still plenty to fight for for Spurs this term.

The Champions League knockout stages are not too far ahead in the future, while the FA Cup also presents Pochettino’s men with the chance to get some silverware in the trophy cabinet.

And if they do manage to lift a trophy this year, finish in the top four and Kane continues his incredible run of goalscoring form, then Spurs certainly have to be thought of as contenders to get back in the title picture next season.
