Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day Two, which was broadcast on BBC One on 25th August, that Tottenham Hotspur’s players were ‘lazy’ against Newcastle United.

Tottenham lost 1-0 yesterday against Newcastle in one of the shock results of the weekend.

Spurs lack of creativity was bemoaned after the match, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggled to break down Newcastle’s back line.

But Shearer thinks that Spurs should be more concerned about their players’ lack of effort.

“The biggest concern would be the way they conceded,” he said.

“There is a lack of effort from Tottenham players. Not once in the whole build up does any Tottenham player break into a sprint.

“Not one player gets within 15 yards of any Newcastle player, they don’t get near them. Jogging, not good enough, lazy, not working hard enough. Before they know it the ball is in the net.”

It is not the first time that Tottenham have struggled against a side who have sat deep in recent times.

Spurs finished last season poorly, and even on opening day against Aston Villa, they left it late to claim the three points.

Spurs now face serious question marks over their top four credentials, even at this early stage of the season.

Tottenham’s next match comes against Arsenal, and there is already pressure on them to win in the north London derby.
