The Tottenham Hotspur defender had to go off during the second-half against Ajax due to a facial injury.
Alan Shearer criticised the decision to allow Jan Vertonghen back onto the field of play during Tottenham’s defeat to Ajax on Tuesday night, when speaking exclusively to the Sun, admitting that he could not believe what he was seeing.
The Spurs defender suffered a heavy blow to the face, after challenging for a header and colliding with the back of Toby Alderweireld’s head.
He was then quickly patched up before being sent back onto the pitch.
Vertonghen only lasted a few seconds, however, signalling to the bench that he could not continue, before nearly fainting and throwing up on the side of the pitch.
The Tottenham ace was clearly suffering from concussion, and it would have perhaps been the prudent play to bring him off immediately.
And Shearer told the Sun how it was extremely worrying to see the Tottenham man is such a bad state having suffered such a serious facial injury:
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was scary. The guy could barely walk. He was covered in blood and staggering around. How can it be OK for a guy to go back on to the pitch in the condition he was in? Uefa have to stop this happening again.”
Tottenham have some vitally important games coming up both domestically and on the content, and Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that Vertonghen is back and available for selection as soon as possible.
The north London club must learn from what happened to the Belgian on Tuesday night, however.
