Liverpool were so close to winning their first league title since 1990 this season.

Alan Shearer highlighted Liverpool’s failure to beat Manchester City this season as the key games in the title race, when writing his regular column for the Sun, whilst admitting that he is reluctant to say that the Reds lost the title.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were quite simply brilliant this season, taking 97 points from their 38 games – a tally that would have been good enough to win the league in all but two of the 27 seasons since its inaugural campaign in 1992.

Liverpool’s season is far from over, however, with a Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur to look forward to on June 1st in Madrid.

Liverpool would have won the Premier League title this season, had they turned one of their seven draws into a win, and Shearer highlighted the two games against City as key turning points in the race for the title, when writing his regular column for the Sun:

Jurgen Klopp manager

“I’m reluctant to say they’ve lost the title. With the gap between them and City only one point in the end, you’ve got to look back at the head-to-heads between the two. At the Etihad in January, second-placed City won 2-1. Even a draw would have kept Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead by seven points, so they will likely look back at that as the key game. Despite that, Liverpool and City need congratulating for setting such high standards.”

Quite where or how Liverpool will strengthen this summer remains to be seen, but Jurgen Klopp will surely be keen on bringing more quality to Anfield during the off-season.

And Reds fans will be desperate to see their club go one step further next season by eclipsing City to the Premier League title.
