Aston Villa captain John McGinn has made Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week.

The 28-year-old’s efforts helped the Villans run out 3-0 winners over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Ollie Watkins registered a brace and an assist to take his league tally this season to 14 goals and six assists.

Meanwhile, Jacob Ramsey scored his fourth Premier League goal of the campaign and also grabbed an assist.

Every Villa player impressed on the day, and McGinn was at his best against a tough opponent.

Not only was his overall game impressive, but he also played a part in two of Villa’s goals.

Shearer said of the £2million midfielder on the Premier League website: “Superb.

“I didn’t think Newcastle’s midfield could be dominated that easily.”

McGinn is one of three Villans players to make the cut in the matchweek 31 selection.

Villa teammates Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins also featured in Shearer’s XI.

Meanwhile, Unai Emery got the nod as the manager of the week.

‘Bang at it’

The Birmingham Mail gave McGinn an 8 out of 10 for his efforts on the day.

“Had a good tussle with Dan Burn throughout,” they wrote.

“McGinn’s cross made Ramsey’s opener as Watkins headed down.

“The captain was bang at it this afternoon, showing his usual grit and determination with a sprinkling of real quality with his passing.

“McGinn was the instigator for Watkins’ goal as well. Strong… again.”

Villa are now just six points off the Champions League places with seven games remaining.

They will surely fancy their chances of sealing a European spot come the end of May.

Up next for Emery’s charges is the Premier League trip to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
