The Reds continue to push Manchester City all the way in the Premier League title race.
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has given his honest opinion on Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Cardiff City on Sunday.
While the BBC Sport pundit and Newcastle United and England icon admits the Reds were “not spectacular”, he praised them for getting the job done in wake of consistent pressure from Premier League title rivals Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s charges had beaten Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff to go back at the top of the table, and Liverpool faced a long wait before their kickoff late on Sunday afternoon.
However, Georginio Wijnaldum’s third goal of the season just before the hour and a James Milner penalty nine minutes from time sealed a ninth consecutive victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side that restored their two-point lead over City at the top.
Wednesday night sees the Citizens engaged in what promises to be a fiery derby against Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Liverpool are next back in action on Friday night when they host Huddersfield Town.
In his Sun column, Shearer stressed how important it was for City to win at United but thought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side cannot possibly be as bad as they were in the 4-0 loss to Everton, which is “great news” for Liverpool.
“Jurgen Klopp’s side were not spectacular at Cardiff but they again responded to City’s win over Tottenham on Saturday and got the job done,” the Toon legend wrote. “They never looked in danger, even at 0-0 with 35 minutes left. They kept going and you just felt that they would get the breakthrough in the end.
“The standard of football from both Liverpool and City has just been incredible this season. They both deserve huge credit for the staggering amount of good football they are serving up in this exhilarating title race.”
