Alan Shearer shares his thoughts on Declan Rice’s performance after West Ham United beat Newcastle United

West Ham United recorded a win against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has singled out the performance of West Ham ace Declan Rice, who did ‘a bit of everything’ during his side’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday in the Premier League.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring after seven minutes and produced an eye-catching midfield display, particularly from a defensive standpoint to help his team record three points and a clean sheet.

After Rice had headed home following Robert Snodgrass’ cross, captain Mark Noble doubled his side’s lead from the penalty spot when Florian Lejeune clumsily fouled Javier Hernandez in the penalty area just before half-time.

Speaking to Match of the Day on BBC One (02/03/2019 at 11:40 pm), Shearer spoke with high praise about Rice’s display as he pointed out what he did after the game.

“I thought his performance had a bit of everything,” Shearer told Match of the Day. “Passing forward, whether that was the protection in front of his back four, being aggressive in the tackle, little bits of skill here and there.

“He got his goal. His range of passing I thought was excellent. And he still had time to watch himself on the screen in the end. A round of applause, he deserved it.”

At the start of the season, Manuel Pellegrini didn’t pick Rice on a regular basis in his starting XI, but a number of poor performances from the team resulted in him breaking his way into the starting XI.

Since then, he has not looked back and produced a number of high-quality performances for the Hammers, who move into ninth place in the Premier League.

Over the course of the season, Rice has played 26 league matches for his side, scoring two goals, helping his team secure five clean sheets along the way [transfermarkt].

Recently, Rice opted to switch allegiance to England after representing the Republic of Ireland on three occasions as he will be hoping to make Gareth Southgate’s squad later on this month.
