Alan Shearer has revealed in The Sun what he fears about Newcastle United.

The Newcastle legend has stated that he is worried that if a takeover does not go through by the end of the season, then the Magpies will lose Rafael Benitez.

Benitez is in charge of the Magpies at the moment and is doing quite well at the moment.

Newcastle are in the running for a top-10 finish in the Premier League this season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

Current Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale, with a report in The Sun claiming that Amanda Staveley and her PCP Capital Partners group will continue takeover talks this week.

Newcastle legend Shearer hopes that the takeover goes through before the season ends.

“My fear is that if a takeover does not go through by the end of this season, he will be lost to Newcastle,” Shearer wrote in The Sun. “Benitez has them up in seventh place. Imagine what he could be doing with some serious financial backing.”

Newcastle fans must be excited at the prospect of new owners taking over and then pushing the team to greater heights.

The Magpies have a massive fanbase, and with investment in the squad, the team on the pitch can be hugely successful.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, though, does not think that Newcastle can break into the top six of the Premier League anytime soon.

“I’m not seeing Newcastle, God love them, going past Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal any time soon – whether it is £500 million or not,” The Chronicle quotes Jordan as saying.

Meanwhile, according to Contra.gr, Newcastle and Everton sent scouts to watch 20-year-old attacking midfielder Thanasis Androutsos in action for Olympiakos against Barcelona last week.

Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Paul Merson believes that top players will join Newcastle once new owners take over.

“It’s a lot of money, it’s a lot of money but if they have got the money, you will get the players there,” said Merson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News last Saturday afternoon (2:18pm, October 21, 2017) when asked if Newcastle can compete with the very best teams in the Premier League. “You will get players to go and play there because of the crowd and the stadium.”
