Chris Wood has signed for Newcastle United.

The New Zealander has swapped Turf Moor for St James’ Park, and while he has joined the richest club in the world, he hasn’t managed to escape the Premier League’s bottom three.

Indeed, Wood has swapped the 18th-placed side for the 19th-placed, and his goal remains the same, fire his team to safety.

Wood arrived with massive expectations on his shoulders. He’s a £25m signing and, as everyone knows, Newcastle United usually expect quality from their strikers.

Indeed, St James’ Park has been blessed by some unbelievable number nines over the years from Andy Cole to Les Ferdinand, but undoubtedly, the best of the bunch was Alan Shearer.

Shearer is a Newcastle legend, and he’s sent Wood a message on Twitter after he signed for the Magpies.

Shearer wishes Wood luck, and he may well need it.

Wood arrives in poor form. He’s scored just three league goals this season, and if he doesn’t improve his output, he could well end up playing in the Championship next season.

Luckily, the New Zealander is joining a squad that is only going to improve, and with Kieran Trippier likely to supply quality delivery from right-back, he should be able to use his aerial ability to score bags of goals.

Wood may not be Shearer 2.0, but if he keeps Newcastle up this season, he may well go down as a cult hero for years to come.
