Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has written on Coral.co.uk that Theo Walcott is a good player, but not a great player.

The former Newcastle striker has been impressed with the performances of Walcott for Arsenal so far this season.

Shearer, though, is not getting carried away, and believes that the England international, who can play as a forward or as a winger, needs to be more consistent.

“He’s on a hot run of form but we have seen this before from Theo Walcott,” Shearer wrote on Coral.co.uk. “He’s never been able to hold down a place in the England side, and once again he failed to perform for his country in his two starts recently.

“But in an Arsenal shirt this season he’s been having a very good time of it. I think he’s a good player, but I can’t say he’s a great player because every time he’s had these runs of good form he hasn’t been able to maintain it.

“If I’m sitting here in three years’ time saying what a great few years Theo has had, then I will call him a very, very good player. He simply has to do it on a more regular basis.”

Walcott is a talented footballer, but the problem with him over the past few years has been injuries.

Another issue has been that the 27-year-old has been unable to establish himself in a specific position in the Arsenal team.

While versatility is important for any footballer, in the case of Walcott, perhaps it has impeded him from making progress.

While the former Southampton attacker has scored goals when played as a striker, there has been occasions when he has missed good chances.

Walcott has scored five goals and created 10 chances in nine Premier League appearances for Arsenal so far this season.

In two Champions League matches so far this campaign, the 27-year-old has scored three goals and created two chances.
