Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has spoken about the potential for Steve Bruce to take over at Aston Villa – telling talkSPORT today (07/10/16) that his appointment would be a no-brainer from the Villa board.

Aston Villa are currently without a manager after the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo. The club are currently 19th in the Championship after a poor start to the season in which they have mustered just one win.

Bruce, who left his role as Hull City boss in the summer, has become the early favourite for the job and Shearer says the parties have spoken and that Bruce would be an excellent appointment for Aston Villa:

“Well he’s spoke to them. How the talks have gone I haven’t got a clue but it’s not surprising that the big clubs will want Brucey because when you look at his record for bringing clubs up from the Championship it is second to none.

“It’s a no-brainer that club will want to hire him and it depends whether he can go in and do things his own way.

“Again, when you look at how much has been spent by Aston Villa in the summer it’s an absolute fortune. So he’ll want more funds if he was to go in there.”

Aston Villa fans have mixed feelings on Bruce, a former Birmingham City manager, taking over at Villa Park. However, his promotion record is fairly impressive from the second tier.

He has been promoted to the Premier League on four separate occasions, twice with Villa’s fiercest rivals Birmingham and twice with Hull City.

That experience is surely something Villa will need to consider in their appointment of a new manager and Bruce can therefore not be ignored.
