Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been waxing-lyrical about West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.
Shearer was analysing some of the candidates for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award, and inevitably, the conversation turned towards Rice.
Shearer says the West Ham man’s work often goes unnoticed, despite the fact he’s been instrumental.
What’s been said?
Shearer is clearly a big fan of Rice, claiming that he’s been key to the Hammers’ resurgence this season.
“Another player who has had a strong year in the capital is Declan Rice, he’s become the new leader at West Ham and the anchor in the midfield. He often goes unnoticed, but the dirty work he does in the middle of the park has been instrumental in the Hammers’ resurgence,” Shearer said.
“Rice’s game feeds off blocks and interceptions, but he’s also an good ball carrier, and has excellent discipline, conceding just 21 fouls all season.”
Underrated
Despite the fact Rice has been labelled as a £100m player, we still can’t help but agree with Shearer about him being underrated.
West Ham fans certainly know how good he is, but it seems as though the wider footballing world hasn’t woken up to just how talented this young man is.
Of course, a strong performance with England at the Euros could change perceptions entirely, but it surely won’t be long until Rice is recognised as one of the best players in the country.
