Alan Shearer has told BBC MOTD’s Top 10 that he does not expect much from Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min at the World Cup in Qatar – largely because of South Korea’s tough group, which features Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay.
Son, 30, comes into the tournament having missed the last few games with Spurs before the World Cup. That is down to suffering a facial injury sustained in a win over Marseille, where Son suffered a quadruple fracture under his left eye.
It forced the South Korea skipper to undergo an operation. He missed the last few games, but has been included in South Korea’s squad and was training with his country in Qatar, with by a mask. South Korea have a tough ask.
Even with Son ready to go, South Korea have it all to do. Portugal are expected to win the group, Uruguay to come second – with players such as Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Spurs teammate Rodrigo Bentancur.
Shearer and Micah Richards were asked to pick between 10 stars from different countries ahead of the World Cup. Son was on the list, but Shearer picked him ninth. He does not expect Son to do much given South Korea’s group.
“Yeah [i don’t expect South Korea to do brilliantly]. They’ve got a tough group. Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay. They might get out of it, but I don’t expect them to go much further than that. That is why I’ve got him ninth,” Shearer said.

Son has a really tricky task of helping his South Korea side get out of the group. South Korea are renowned for their ability to surprise at the World Cup – beating Germany in 2018, in which Son scored in a late 2-0 win in Russia.
Son and South Korea will have to accept losing to Portugal is a possibility. But holding out for a point against Cristiano Ronaldo’s side would be a good result. Against Ghana, they will see that as a possible win. Uruguay, level pegging.
