Alan Shearer labelled Jordan Pickford’s performance for Everton against Newcastle on Saturday as ‘strange’ and ‘stupid’, when writing his regular column for the Sun.

The Toffees squandered a two-goal lead against the Magpies, and ended up losing the game 3-2 – a result that piles the pressure right back on Marco Silva.

Pickford played his part in Everton’s defeat, and he seemed to be more interested in interacting with the St James’ Park crowd than he was on actually doing his job between the sticks.

The 24-year-old joined the Blues from Sunderland in the summer of 2017, for around £25 million, and he continues to be an extremely divisive player, with many fans split on whether he is actually a top class goalkeeper.

Shearer certainly doesn’t believe so.

The Newcastle legend delivered a scathing criticism of the Everton ace after his display against the Toon on Saturday, when writing his regular column for the Sun:

Jordan Pickford of Everton looks on during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Everton FC at St. James Park on March 09, 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

“I was at Newcastle to watch a very strange performance from England keeper Jordan Pickford. In fact, it was stupid at times. He simply got carried away and involved in things he shouldn’t have been. He let the crowd and occasion get to him. Pickford should know as an ex-Sunderland player he will get stick from Newcastle fans. But then he wants to get involved with gestures and smiles. It’s a ridiculous and bizarre way of behaving.”

Everton’s defeat means that they are now seven points adrift of seventh placed Wolves, and Pickford an co will have to drastically improve upon their performances on Saturday, if they are to have any chance of securing Europa League football this term.
