Alan Shearer has told his Premier League TOTW column that Chelsea defender Reece James outperformed Tottenham and Liverpool stars Matt Doherty and Trent Alexander-Arnold over the course of the weekend.
Chelsea secured an important away win over Burnley on Saturday, easing past Sean Dyche’s side to win 4-0 at Turf Moor. James, 22, opened the scoring and got himself an assist during the comprehensive victory.
There were also excellent displays at right-back from Alexander-Arnold – his cross-shot falling perfectly for Sadio Mane to tap home as Liverpool beat West Ham 1-0 – and more recently, Matt Doherty on Monday evening.
Tottenham surpassed Everton with ease, winning 5-0 in North London and a resurgent Doherty clocked up two assists – producing four goal involvements in his last two Premier League matches for Tottenham.
Shearer chose to name James ahead of Doherty and Alexander-Arnold: “In a weekend featuring other superb right-back displays from Alexander-Arnold and Doherty, James is my pick thanks to his goal and assist.”
Shearer chooses James: Harsh on Tottenham and Liverpool stars?
Alexander-Arnold was excellent, but he was probably a level below James and Doherty during the latest round of Premier League fixtures. Doherty was immense for Tottenham on Monday as Spurs elbowed Everton aside.
Clocking up two assists, his form has been resurgent under Antonio Conte. His assists came for Harry Kane, who scored Tottenham’s third and fifth goals. Shearer may have chosen with James, is properly changing a game.
What James did, was carve out an opener himself – twisting and turning two or three Burnley defenders inside out before blasting an effort past Nick Pope to open the scoring. An incredible moment of skill from James.
