Alan Shearer has told his Premier League Team of the Week column that Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard is “simply magnificent” after his hat-trick against Liverpool at Anfield – amid reports that Arsenal want to sign the Belgian.
Trossard, 27, has started the season in stunning form. Coming into the season, he had played 106 times for Brighton. In that time, he had scored 18 goals and 11 assists. A decent return, of around one goal involvement every four games.
But this season, he has taken his game to a whole new level. Even before his hat-trick against Liverpool, he had two goals and two assists in six Premier League outings. Now, he has seven goals and assists in seven league games.
Bought for £18million by Brighton from the conveyor belt that is KRC Genk, he is proving to be an incredible bargain. Not least as he is a regular in Belgium’s squad. According to Voetbal Belgie, Arsenal want to sign the fleet-footed ace.
On this current form, and with Arsenal lacking depth for Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, it is easy to see why. Picking him in his TOTW, Shearer said: “Not many opposition players score a hat-trick at Anfield. Simply magnificent.”

He is a player Arsenal should consider signing – but he does not fit Edu’s transfer blueprint. Normally, Edu will go for players that are widely experienced but still between 20 and 25. Look at Ben White, Martin Odegaard and plenty more.
Trossard is 27. But what could appeal to Arsenal in January, or next summer, is his contract situation at Brighton. Trossard is on a four-year deal. But he signed in 2019, that expires at the end of the season. A new deal looks unlikely.
So, Trossard looks unlikely to stay and that could give Arsenal the chance to sign him on the cheap. Or, come next summer, on a free transfer. It might just tempt Edu into making an allowance when it comes to the Belgian.
