Newcastle United came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park.
Liverpool dominated possession and created loads of chances but once again they failed to capitalise as Rafa Benitez guided the Magpies to a draw.
Philippe Coutinho gave Liverpool the lead with a brilliant long-range effort, but poor defending from Joel Matip allowed Joselu to equalise for the home side before the break.
The Reds were dominant in the second half, but they couldn’t breach Newcastle’s resolute defence. With this result, Liverpool have now won just one of their last seven games in all competitions.
Former Newcastle United striker turned football pundit, Alan Shearer, took to social networking site Twitter to express his opinion about the match.
He noted that it was a “good point” for the Magpies. He also pointed out that Liverpool were too slow in possession, and were wasteful in attack.
Shearer said during his commentary with BBC Radio 5 Live that Liverpool didn’t have answer to Newcastle’s rigid and compact shape.
He added that Liverpool have a “long way to go” before challenging for the title, and predicts the Reds won’t be in the title race this season.
“From a Newcastle point of view it was a very good, solid, performance – in particular in the second half. Liverpool only really had one opportunity,” said Shearer on BBC Radio 5 Live (BBC Live blog – 18:28 pm).
“Liverpool didn’t have enough answers to the rigid, compact shape of Newcastle. Their pace of play was too slow.
“The defence again has cost them. Liverpool have a long way to go if are to be challenging for the title. It wont be happening this season.”
