Newcastle United wrapped up 10th place in the Premier League in some style on the final day of the season.

Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to suggest that Newcastle have enjoyed a fantastic first season back in the Premier League, while he also lauded the supporters for the way that they have stuck by the Magpies this term.

Rafa Benitez’s men ended the campaign on a stunning high. Survival was secured some time ago, and there had been suggestions that the Magpies were already on their holidays as they suffered four defeats on the spin leading into their final day clash with Chelsea – they had only lost two league games in 2018 before that run began.

But any suggestion that they had already packed their bags for the summer was quickly quashed as Newcastle stormed to a stunning win that denied Chelsea the chance to put a bit of pressure on the top four.

Dwight Gayle broke the deadlock in the first-half, while Ayoze Perez ensured that he would finish the campaign as the side’s leading goalscorer, scoring twice to take his league tally to eight.

It was a superb finish to an encouraging first season back at the highest level and left Benitez’s men inside the top-half of the table and just 10 points off Burnley who took the final European spot for next season.

And after the victory, Shearer took to social media to laud Benitez, the team and the supporters for the role that they have each played in re-establishing Newcastle back at England’s top table.
