Speaking to Coral Bet, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has said he is delighted that owner Mike Ashley has decided to sell up, claiming that people outside the club don’t realise how big it is.

Ashley announced on Monday that he had officially put the Magpies up for sale in a development which has delighted the Newcastle faithful.

BBC Sport reported that 44-year-old Financier Amanda Staveley is a “potential suitor”, with The Sun reporting today that she’s in talks over a deal.

The 53-year-old has never been hugely popular with the fanbase for the way in which he has run the club, though his perception among the St James’s Park faithful took a turn for the worst this past summer when manager Rafael Benitez found himself working with less of a transfer budget than he previously thought.

It is also safe to say that Shearer isn’t his biggest fan either, with the United legend saying that such a development can only be a hugely positive thing for the club.

“At the moment we have an owner who does not want to be there and does not understand this football club. He is not prepared to spend his own money and invest in the team,” he told Coral Bet.

“He has openly apologised on television for undermining previous managers. This is nothing but good news for the club.

“Ashley seems to enjoy antagonising the fans and going against what the club stands for, so the fans have every right to be delighted by this news.

“People outside of Newcastle may not see how big they are. The fans are passionate and desperate for success.

“We had hundreds of thousands of fans lining the street when we were beaten in the FA Cup final. You can imagine the support if we were successful.”
