Shearer famously turned down the chance to join Manchester United in favour of his hometown club Newcastle United for a world record transfer fee in 1996.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has commented on the mocking chant Manchester United fans continue to sing, 20 years after the striker turned the club down.
The chant could be heard during the Red Devils’ 3-1 EFL Cup victory at Northampton Town and the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer simply pointed out on Twitter how dated and irrelevant the chant was.

Oh what can it be
To a, sad Geordie bast*rd
And a, sh*te football team…(@redfreddevil) pic.twitter.com/w1xklp4enr

The chant was coined by Man United fans soon after the summer of 1996 when Shearer joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers for a world record transfer fee of £15m.
Sang in the tune of Daydream Believer by The Monkees, it is a retort to Magpies’ fans teasing the Red Devils over the fact that the Geordie striker opted for the North East move.
Chants of a similar nature often arise when the two sides play each other but for it to crop up at Sixfields in an EFL Cup third-round tie is somewhat unexpected.
Surely Manchester United fans can’t still be bitter over the rejection? Given the fact that it happened over 20 years ago and the club went on to have plenty of success without Shearer – who won nothing at Newcastle.

The former number nine still went on to become the Magpies all-time top goalscorer and has admitted he has ‘no regrets’ over joining his boyhood club.
Perhaps it was just one of those occasions where fans happen to break out into a random ‘back catalogue’ chant for the sake of it – football supporters are often not exactly the most logical people in the world, after all.
