Newcastle United’s promotion hopes received a major boost on Friday evening as Bristol City hammered Huddersfield Town 4-0 at Ashton Gate.

Huddersfield travelled to take on the struggling Robins with the chance to close the gap to the top two to just three points – but they endured a nightmare against Lee Johnson’s men.

Lee Tomlin ghosted through the Huddersfield defence before rounding Danny Ward to score on 30 minutes, and Tammy Abraham prodded home David Cotterill’s cross to make it 2-0 before half time.

Huddersfield attempted to get back into the game, but Aden Flint’s backheel handed Bristol City a third, and Cotterill made it 4-0 with a late penalty after Joe Bryan had been brought down inside the area.

Whilst Bristol City’s hopes of avoiding relegation were handed a major boost, Huddersfield will feel that they missed a huge opportunity to close the gap in their search of automatic promotion.

They now remain six points adrift of Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle, and with Brighton travelling to take on Leeds United just hours after Newcastle’s trip to face Birmingham City, that gap could be extended to nine points.

Newcastle can move one step closer to promotion today, and club legend Alan Shearer took to Twitter after Bristol City’s win over Huddersfield to celebrate.

Shearer sent a message to Bristol City’s official Twitter account proclaiming his love for them after their victory, before looking ahead to Newcastle’s game against Birmingham.
