Newcastle are reportedly keen on signing Southampton ace Mohammed Salisu and Alan Shearer has heaped praise on the defender for his display on Saturday. Southampton beat Norwich City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Southampton have been in excellent form of late under the impressive Ralph Hasenhuttl, winning five of their last nine Premier League matches. Only one defeat has come their way, Salisu starting all nine outings.
The 22-year-old defender endured a tricky season last term, playing only 15 times. But this season, he has started all but one of Southampton’s 26 Premier League matches. Newcastle are said to be interested in his services.
90Min report that Newcastle want to sign Salisu in the summer, after first being linked with the £40m-rated defender in January. Such a fee would see Southampton almost quadruple the £10.9million they got him for in 2020.
Shearer was full of praise for the Ghanaian defender in his Premier League Team of the Week column – as Southampton beat Norwich 2-0: “Rock-solid again for Southampton, the centre-back didn’t give Norwich a look-in.”
Shearer on Salisu: Newcastle would be making an excellent signing
Newcastle will need a couple of centre-backs in the summer. Fabian Schar remains out of contract at the end of the campaign, Ciaran Clark is no longer in the 25-man squad, while Federico Fernandez is now 33.
The Argentine himself is out of contract in 2023. So, with Schar, Fernandez and Clark potentially going in the summer – Newcastle need a couple of replacements. Salisu is perfect for the Toon, if they can arrange a fee.
Young, but experienced in the Premier League, Salisu would be an improvement on the current side – but also, one for the future. If a fee of £30million could be agreed, it is a deal Newcastle must really consider.
