Newcastle signed Dan Burn from Brighton in the January window but were also linked with a move to sign his Seagulls teammate Adam Webster. Now, Alan Shearer has predicted an England call-up for the Brighton defender.
The 27-year-old joined Brighton in the summer of 2019 from Bristol City for a fee of £20million (Express). It was a deal that many deemed expensive, but it has paid off – with Webster producing the form of his life of late.
He scored in a 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, having captained Brighton in their two fixtures prior to the win over Roy Hodgson’s new side – in the absence of Lewis Dunk. He is proving to be crucial for Brighton.
The Express claim that Newcastle remain interested and want to sign Webster in the summer – forming a quick reunion with Burn. But a move hinges on whether Newcastle can avoid relegation come May.
Toon legend Shearer would clearly back a move – after naming Webster in his team of the week for his display against Watford. He said: “He was outstanding and showed why some say he deserves an England call-up.”
Shearer on Webster: Wise move, or should Newcastle go for better?
Newcastle have all the money in the world and if there were no financial rules in place to prevent them from spending that cash – they would probably have Diego Carlos and Sven Botman at the club right now.
But Financial Fairplay does dictate how much they can spend. It prevents them from splashing out – hence the extensive discussions they had with clubs over transfer fees. It saw Carlos and Botman moves end up in failure.
Webster would be a top signing. But he would cost far more than the £20million that Brighton paid in 2019. Is he worth it? Or would Newcastle be better off spending double that on a Botman in the summer?
