Mikel Merino has been in fine form at Newcastle United since signing from Borussia Dortmund.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer looks on before the FA Cup Second round match between Hartlepool United and Blyth Spartans at Victoria Park on December 5, 2014 in Hartlepool, England.

Alan Shearer has told the True Geordie’s Youtube channel that he has been very impressed with the way that Mikel Merino has started at Newcastle United.

Merino has been brought to Newcastle from Borussia Dortmund on loan, and the Spanish midfielder has impressed with his performances.

Merino has looked very bright whenever he has been given a chance by Rafael Benitez.

And Shearer admits that the Newcastle new boy looks to be a very good talent, especially in possession.

“He’s had a good start, the fans like him,” Shearer said. “He’s good on the ball, tidy. [Benitez] likes him. He’s done well.”

Merino is expected to sign permanent for Newcastle at the end of his loan spell if he continues to perform so impressively.

The 21-year-old has adapted to playing in England swiftly, and already looks to have a big role to play at Newcastle.

Initially Merino was partnered with Isaac Hayden in Newcastle’s first choice midfield pairing, but he worked well in tandem with Jonjo Shelvey during the Magpies’ last match against Liverpool.

Newcastle return to action after the international break, when they take on Southampton at St. Mary’s.
