Manchester City moved above Liverpool in the Premier League table following their win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.
Alan Shearer has sung the praises of Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden following his dazzling display during his side’s 1-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola opted to start the highly-rated youngster in the crucial Premier League match and he didn’t disappoint by scoring the only goal of the game.
It was an impressive display by the Manchester-born player, who has been talked about for some while now.
Speaking to Match of the Day on BBC One (20/04/2019 at 10:45 pm), Shearer was in awe of what Foden did against Spurs.
“I think it will be [the first of many goals for Foden],” Shearer told Match of the Day. “So intelligent in the way he finds space. When he gets into his [goalscoring] position, it’s no fluke he finds himself in there. Clever play from him. He’s against Alderweirld, who is an experienced player, he gets in between them.
“He gets whacked [by Eric Dier]. It’s a bad tackle, I think, but he gets up doesn’t moan about it, gets on with it and goes in for the tackle again and gives a little bit back. Not fazed by it at all.
“I think he gives them better options there’s no doubt about that – he’s ready to be let off the leash and he’s ready to be a regular starter there’s no doubt in my mind.”
It remains to be seen whether Foden will be given more regular starts by Guardiola as his team chase the Premier League title and the FA Cup.
They were knocked out by Spurs in the Champions League in midweek, but they still have a chance to win the treble if they are successful in their remaining competitions.
As for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, they have a Champions League semi-final with Ajax to look forward to, but before then they will be looking to secure their top-four status for the season.
