Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on BBC One on 10th September, that Tottenham Hotspur were helped out hugely by Stoke City’s defending during their 4-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium.

Tottenham put in a hugely impressive display against Stoke, but Shearer felt that Mark Hughes’ side poor defensive performance did aid the Lilywhites.

Stoke were all at sea at the back throughout the contest, and Spurs made them pay with a ruthless display of finishing.

Heung Min-Son scored twice, while Dele Alli and Harry Kane also hit the back of the net to round off the triumph.

And Shearer said: “I thought it was much more like Tottenham. It’s been a positive start to the season, but they weren’t half helped by some shocking defending from Stoke. Son was brilliant and now is giving them options on the right-hand side, but he gets so much space.

“Tottenham make it look so easy. They were very, very good.”

Tottenham’s win in the Potteries has elevated them into fourth place in the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites remain unbeaten, and they appear to have shaken off the disappointment of the end of last term with ease.

Spurs will now be looking to continue their fine of form by beating Monaco in their first Champions League fixture of the season at Wembley on Wednesday evening.
