Alan Shearer says he really likes Mikel Arteta’s call to bring trophy-winning midfielder Jorginho to Arsenal during the January transfer window.

The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer added that Jorginho will bring in a ‘wealth of experience’, as he also lauded Arteta as someone who is ‘really bright’ and ‘intelligent’.

When the Premier League leaders were chasing that all-important midfielder last month, their number one target was Moises Caicedo.

And despite Brighton selling Leandro Trossard to the Gunners during that very same month, they just didn’t move an inch when it came to letting go of Caicedo.

That’s why there was a late, yet probably unexpected move for Jorginho, who recently won the European Cup in Chelsea colours and Euro 2020 with Italy.

Nonetheless, when Shearer was asked to share his thoughts on Arteta and Jorginho, he issued the following response, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“They are a very, very good team,” said Shearer. “With a really bright and intelligent manager.

“I really do like the Jorginho signing. He will bring a wealth of experience. How to win. How to get over the line.

“There are still going to be big questions and big times they will have to navigate over the coming months. Who better to get than a guy that has been there and done it at every level.”

JORGINHO’S ARSENAL DEBUT

On Saturday, Jorginho made his Arsenal debut when Arteta’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sean Dyche’s Everton.

At the time, the midfielder himself and his teammates would have been down in the dumps because it put a small dent in their race to win the Premier League title.

But, fast forward to the present, and Man City’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday has put the smile back on the face of those associated with Arsenal because their nearest rivals haven’t been able to capitalise on their setback.
