Alan Shearer has posted on Twitter immediately after Newcastle secured a second successive win in the Premier League – a superb 3-1 win over Everton at St. James’ Park. Allan Saint-Maximin was phenomenal.
Coming into the match, the atmosphere was electric. Having beaten Leeds 1-0 last time out, Newcastle came into the match full of optimism. The new arrivals of Matt Targett, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn were all included.
Targett started on the left of the defence while Bruno made a late cameo role for his new side – having only joined up with Newcastle last Friday, after representing Brazil. The Toon got off to the worst start.
Jamaal Lascelles scored an own goal, only for Mason Holgate to do exactly the same. But it was Saint-Maximin that proved the difference in the second half, firstly creating Ryan Fraser’s goal – putting the Toon 2-1 up.
Kieran Trippier scored a wonderful free-kick, his first since joining from Atletico Madrid – while Saint-Maximin continued to torment Everton’s defence and get the Toon up the pitch. Shearer gave his verdict.
Shearer reacts as Newcastle beat Everton, Quinn also has his say
Not only was it a scrappy win, but Newcastle probably should have scored more. Everton looked good on the ball, but a combination of defensive mistakes and a lack of punch in the final third contributed to the Toon win.
Quinn joined Shearer in posting on Twitter immediately after the win, underlining his delight and stating that such a victory will boost the confidence of Newcastle’s players in their fight against relegation.
