Marco Silva had been under pressure regarding his Goodison Park job but the Toffees rallied round last weekend with a win.
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has named two Everton players – plus Goodison Park boss Marco Silva – in his Premier League Team of the Week (official PL website).
The Toffees, who had been on a poor run of form prior to the international break, rallied round in style last weekend as they ran out 2-0 winners over West Ham United at Goodison Park.
Bernard opened the scoring before Gylfi Sigurdsson got the killer second in injury time to put the Toffees 15th in the standings ahead of matchday 10, as well as easing the pressure on Silva.
Yerry Mina was a rock at the back, coping well with the threat of Sebastien Haller right up until coming off the pitch in added time, receiving a standing ovation from the Goodison Park crowd.
Andre Gomes, meanwhile, put in a near-flawless performance, weighing in with several raking passes to split the West Ham defence wide open, and showed plenty of energy and desire well into the latter stages of the game.
“This was a powerful display by the Everton defender,” Shearer said of Mina. “They needed a leader and he fitted the bill. He was dominant at the back and didn’t give Sebastien Haller a sniff for West Ham.”
Of Gomes, the England icon added: “Everton barely gave the West Ham midfield a look-in and a big part of that was down to Gomes. He ran the centre of the park with his touch, technique and energy.”
Finally, Shearer waxed lyrical about Silva, saying: “This wasn’t just a big performance by Everton after a run of four straight defeats, it was a big result for the manager too and moves them out of the bottom three.”
Everton are next in Premier League action against Brighton this Saturday.
