The Aston Villa captain put in a superb display for Dean Smith and co last weekend.
Premier League legend and pundit Alan Shearer has praised Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish for his display last weekend, naming him in his Team of the Week and suggesting that he will have given England manager Gareth Southgate food for thought (Premier League website).
In March this year, Southgate suggested that the 24-year-old needed to be playing in the Premier League to be considered for his England senior debut (The Telegraph), a feat he achieved as he helped Dean Smith’s side into the Championship playoffs and to Wembley victory.
While it was hoped by some fans that Grealish would have made the cut for England’s last two internationals, against Czech Republic and Bulgaria, the Villa talisman was not called up, so his wait for a maiden Three Lions senior cap continues – for a few more weeks at least.
Last weekend, the Villa skipper was thoroughly impressive against Brighton as he bundled home to restore parity on the stroke of half time before causing no end of trouble after being shifted into the centre by Dean Smith, whose side claimed all three points thanks to Matt Targett’s late winner.
Shearer said of Grealish on the Premier League website: “If you are going to try and impress the England manager who was watching from the stands, this is the way to do it! A goal and an assist shouldn’t do his chances any harm at all.”
Villa are up to 11th in the Premier League table after their win, a point ahead of Manchester United, and will take on Manchester City in Saturday’s early kickoff.
