The Tottenham Hotspur skipper received heavy criticism for his role in Liverpool’s winner yesterday.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer looks on before the FA Cup Second round match between Hartlepool United and Blyth Spartans at Victoria Park on December 5, 2014 in Hartlepool, England.

Alan Shearer was highly critical of Hugo Lloris’s calamitous mistake that gifted Liverpool all three points yesterday, when writing his regular column for the Sun, suggesting that there is no explanation for why the Tottenham goalkeeper chose not to catch the ball from Mo Salah’s header.

Spurs were by the far the better team in the second-half at Anfield yesterday, and they really should have taken a point, if not all three, from the contest back with them to north London.

Lloris, 32, should have done much better in the dying minutes, and his mistake ended up costing Tottenham what could prove to be a vital point in the race for the Champions League places.

Shearer explained how he could not quite believe that Lloris chose not to catch the ball from Salah’s header as the game was heading into injury time yesterday, when writing his regular column for the Sun:

Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris celebrates during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium on May 9, 2018 in London, England.

“There is no explanation for Hugo Lloris not catching Mo Salah’s header before the winner ricocheted in off Toby Alderweireld. Give Lloris another thousand of those simple catches and the Spurs keeper will take them.”

Lloris doesn’t have too much time to dwell on his error, with a game against Crystal Palace to come on Wednesday night, and if he continues to make needless mistakes, Paulo Gazzaniga is waiting in the wings to come in and take his place.
