The Newcastle legend had his say on the club’s opening day of the season.
Steve Bruce’s side could find it difficult in the early stages of the season with a new manager, new signings and new ways of playing potentially disrupting form.
Although competing well for the most part against the Gunners, it was far from an inspiring opening day performance from the Magpies.
Shearer was particularly disappointed with the lack of combination between the side’s central attacking threats.
As quoted by The Sun, he said: “From a Newcastle perspective; they need £40million centre- forward Joelinton to hit the ground running and score as quickly as possible.
“But, especially in the first half, he and Miguel Almiron played too far apart from each other and weren’t effective.
“They had one or two neat touches and Joelinton was unlucky with an effort in the first half. He was feeding off scraps all afternoon.”
It’s early days of course and neither should take Shearer’s comments to heart, even though they ring true.
Joelinton was making his competitive debut for the club after a bright pre-season. He has a lot to live up to with a big price tag and Shearer’s old number nine shirt to live up to.
Through the pressure he displayed strength and aerial ability throughout and can build on his initial 90 minutes. He won eight aerial duels against the Gunners, the second highest total of any player in the top-flight over the opening weekend (WhoScored).
Almiron meanwhile is hoping to build on a decent second half of the season last term.
If the tricky attacker can find a way to anticipate Joelinton’s headers or second balls more frequently and dangerously, running at opposition defenders or breaking through their lines, the combination could pay off.
There’s lots of work to do and Bruce will know that, but it’s not all doom and gloom for the Magpies.
