The former Newcastle United striker is impressed with the Dutchman.
Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum in action with Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel
Liverpool spent a handsome amount of money to bring in Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle United this summer.
Toon fans were no doubt disappointed to see him go, but for the price Liverpool paid, were happy to cash in.
The Dutchman had his special moments for Newcastle but was inconsistent – at Liverpool he has been anything but.
He has been consistently good for Liverpool since his move and shone in the recent win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
One man impressed by his form is Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
Newcastle’s Alan Shearer celebrates scoring form the penalty spot during the final minutes of his testimonial
He had this to say about his performance on Match of the Day this weekend (17/09/16):
“The accusation about Wijnaldum last season at Newcastle was he didn’t really turn up for away games. But he turned up at Stamford Bridge for Liverpool last night. I thought he was absolutely superb.
“He stopped Chelsea playing in midfield, he read the game well, he was tough, he was strong and he led from the front.
“When they came under the cosh a little bit in the second half Liverpool he stood firm and it was a brilliant performance from him and from Liverpool.”
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp with Georginio Wijnaldum
Liverpool are certainly happy with the dependable performances of the Dutch international since his move to Anfield.
He has become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield since his switch from St James’ Park and was brilliant against Chelsea in an impressive 2-1 win in London for the Anfield side.
This sort of form is what Newcastle fans knew he was capable of during his time with the club, but were often left frustrated as he went missing on the road.
Liverpool appear to have ended that poor habit.
