Sunderland are currently embroiled in a major relegation dogfight.
BBC pundit Alan Shearer expressed his concern at the goings on at Sunderland at the moment, and highlighted the need for the Black Cats to strengthen their squad in January, if they are to avoid relegation, when speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day Programme.
David Moyes’ men put in a toothless display during their 4-1 loss at Burnley on Saturday, and now sit two points adrift of 17th placed Crystal Palace, after winning just one of their last five league games.
The Wearside outfit now face an incredibly tough looking run of games over the next month, including fixtures against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion.

And Shearer, who scored 206 goals for Sunderland’s fierce rivals Newcastle United, explained how there is only one way that the Black Cats will be able to climb the table during the second half of the season, when speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day:
Sunderland manager David Moyes reacts during the match
“They got him late [Moyes] – the last week of July – and didn’t have a lot of time to plan. It seemed like there was a lot of rushed signings. Now the chief executive has come out and said there won’t be a lot of money available for him this month. Unless Sunderland go out and sign some players, like Sam Allardyce did last year, I think they’ll go down.”
If Moyes is not given funds to improve his squad, he will have to be extremely smart in the manner in which he chooses to recruit players, and may have to target the free transfer market, if he is to strengthen his side accordingly.
