Alan Shearer gives honest reaction to Tottenham VAR controversy

Tottenham Hotspur had a goal chalked off for VAR at Leicester City.

Pundit Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that he thinks VAR is ‘weighted towards defenders’ after Tottenham Hotspur’s goal was ruled out against Leicester City.

Spurs headed to the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon searching for a solution to their away day woes, and it all seemed to be going well when Harry Kane struck them into a first half lead.

Tottenham looked to have made it 2-0 when Serge Aurier struck, but the goal was ruled out because Son Heung-min was offside by millimetres in the build-up.

The decision seemed harsh at the time, given that you could barely even see where Son was offside, and Leicester took full advantage by hitting Tottenham with two goals.

First it was Ricardo Pereira, as the right back equalised from close range, before James Maddison hammered home the winner for the Foxes, sending Spurs home empty-handed.

Much has been made of the VAR decision to overturn Aurier’s goal, with little leeway given to attackers in these circumstances – something Shearer isn’t happy with.

Shearer felt that Aurier’s disallowed goal was the turning point in the game, and whilst he was willing to give VAR a chance, he’s really not impressed with the length of time taken to reach a decision or that attackers are constantly penalised.

Whether it’s handballs against attackers or marginal offside calls, Shearer feels everything is weighted towards defenders, seemingly agreeing with Tottenham’s frustration.

“It was definitely the turning point of the game,” said Shearer. “I was willing to give it a chance, but when you’re taking almost three minutes to get to that decision, and we know the technology is not 100% accurate, because the frame can’t tell us when the ball is actually leaving the foot, and when you’re talking about a millimetre or two, everything is weighted towards the defenders,” he added.
