Speculation has been rife over the future of Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez this summer.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez looks on during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley at Old Trafford on December 26, 2017 in Manchester, England.

Benitez has done a superb job at Newcastle this season with Premier League secured against the odds.

From the outside looking in many neutrals and pundits fully expected Newcastle to be relegated back to the Championship this season.

A lack of investment, a squad lacking in quality and depth, the on-off takeover saga and speculation over the manager’s future meant the odds were stacked against Benitez.

But the much-loved Spaniard remained at St James’ Park and has managed to secure what looks like being a top half finish.

Fans are desperate to see owner Mike Ashley sell up and were disappointed to see the proposed mid-season takeover collapse.

Meanwhile the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Real Sociedad have been linked with an interest in Benitez.

And now Alan Shearer has fired a simple message to Ashley over the future of the Magpies manager in an interview with Coral.

“We’d like a new owner to come in and try to take the club forward (and) give the manager funds to spend,” Shearer told Coral.

“If he can do that with the squad he’s had then you can imagine what he’d do if he had some funds to invest with and really take the club forward which is what all the fans want.

“But there’s only one guy that can sort that out and that’s Mike Ashley. I’m sure the talk with rise again and people will talk about the takeover but only he has the answer to that so we’ll have to wait and see.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer looks on before the FA Cup Second round match between Hartlepool United and Blyth Spartans at Victoria Park on December 5, 2014 in Hartlepool, England.

“I’m the same as all Newcastle fans in that we’d desperately love Rafa to stay, we’ve witnesses this season what he’s capable of.

“I’m sure there will be talk of him going elsewhere, but that all boils down to one man I think, whether he stays, whether he goes, whether he’s going to back him, invest we don’t know, we suspect not.

“But we still know that Mike wants to sell the club so we just have to wait and see (what happens).”
