Alan Shearer has reacted on Amazon Prime Video Sport after Aston Villa decided to sack Steven Gerrard on Thursday night following the club’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage – stating the sacking was “inevitable”.

It comes after a woeful start to the season for Gerrard and Villa. Of their 12 matches, Villa have lost six and secured only three wins – just two of which have come in the Premier League. On Thursday, it was arguably their worst loss.

Indeed, goals from Harrison Reed and Aleksandar Mitrovic – as well as an own goal from Tyrone Mings – saw Villa slump to a disappointing 3-0 loss. Midfielder Douglas Luiz signed a new deal recently, but he was sent off.

The Brazilian saw red for a headbutt. Shearer was asked for his immediate reaction and said that the sacking of Gerrard was always going to happen. He also criticises the captaincy decision to hand the armband to midfielder John McGinn.

“It’s a results driven business, We know that. Every manager does not get time, not at this level. But you have to get results. From where they are to now from when they took over, he will be bitterly disappointed.

“But the inevitable happens. Everything that could have gone wrong, has gone wrong. The captaincy, the injury to Carlos, having to bring back Mings in, it would disrupt the harmony,” Shearer said.

Ultimately, it looked as if Villa were only going in one direction. Many will point to a run of four games without a loss, including a win over Southampton and a draw with Manchester City. But it has not been good enough.

Fans are fed up and a lot of that is down to the negative style of play under Gerrard. His side’s lack of attacking creation and incision. But decisions off the pitch, injuries, and Gerrard losing Michael Beale have all contributed.
