Alan Shearer delivers his verdict on Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley’s latest statement

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez’s is currently up in the air.

Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on 14th May, that he is very concerned that Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United.

Benitez wants assurances over his transfer budget, if he is to stay on at St. James’ Park.

Mike Ashley made a statement yesterday, suggesting that he was prepared to give Benitez all the money Newcastle make.

But Shearer is not convinced that Ashley’s words are any different from what he stated last year.

“Copy and paste. It’s exactly the same as last year. Give him some money to spend,” Shearer said.

“I’m very concerned. He’s got Newcastle into 10th position. If he can do that with that squad, could you imagine what he could do with some backing and some finance.”

If Benitez does leave St. James’ Park it will cause outrage on Tyneside, as he is so popular.

The Spanish boss performed a remarkable job over the past season, with Newcastle surpassing expectations.

The Magpies finished in 10th place in the Premier League table, despite having a limited budget to work with following promotion.

Newcastle closed their season with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea yesterday, and finished up on 44 points.
