Alan Shearer has slated Martin Atkinson’s decision to send off Aaron Cresswell during West Ham United’s match against Crystal Palace on Match of the Day, which was broadcast on 15th October.

Cresswell received two bookings in the latter stages of the contest, and both decisions were controversial.

The left-back was first booked for diving, after he was taken down by Yohan Cabaye in the penalty area, and then he was handed a second yellow for a foul on Wilfried Zaha.

Shearer felt that both decisions were incorrect, and he has slated the officiating during the match.

“They were two terrible decisions,” the former Newcastle United striker said. “Cabaye on Cresswell, he books him for diving, that is ridiculous. He clips him, it should be a penalty. There is no way that’s a dive.

“Then 55 seconds later, one-on-one against Zaha, I’m not even sure it’s a foul let alone a booking. Two terrible decisions.”

Cresswell has missed the entirety of the campaign so far through injury, so his suspension is a major blow for West Ham.

The former Ipswich Town man will be sidelined for one match, leaving Slaven Bilic’s options short at left-back.

West Ham cannot appeal Cresswell’s suspension, as he received two yellow cards rather than a straight red.

West Ham’s next match comes against struggling Sunderland at the weekend.
