Tottenham Hotspur are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table, after a disappointing run of form.

Alan Shearer has told The Sun that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has got his team selections ‘badly wrong’ in recent weeks.

Pochettino opted to rest players when Tottenham took on Monaco last Tuesday in the Champions League, and the decision backfired.

Spurs were awful against the Ligue 1 side, as they crashed out of Europe in the group stages.

Tottenham then restored the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker to their starting line-up against Chelsea in their latest outing.

However, Spurs could not manage to get the victory at Stamford Bridge – with their form worryingly poor.

And Shearer said: “On Tuesday, Mauricio Pochettino had a must-win game away to Monaco and chose to rest two defenders.

“Both Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen were left out with an eye on Saturday’s early evening kick-off against Chelsea.

“Now I accept that with Danny Rose suspended for that game, and Toby Alderweireld injured, he had some juggling to do.

“But you simply do not weaken your side when faced with a game you have to win to stand a chance of progressing in the Champions League.

“What is the point of working so hard to get into it, if you’re going to take a risk like that?

“Ironically, Chelsea’s failure last season has helped their title tilt because, like Liverpool, not being in Europe undoubtedly is a plus for your league form.

“But that does not excuse resting players for what is club football’s premier competition. Pochettino did that and he got it badly wrong.”

Spurs dominated the first half against Chelsea, but they were made to pay for not taking their chances, as Antonio Conte’s side came from behind to claim the three points.

Tottenham have now only won one of their last 10 matches, and they have slipped down to fifth in the Premier League table, as a result.

Spurs are now four points away from the top six, with their next match coming against Swansea City.
