Alan Shearer has criticised Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino in The Sun following the defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby at the weekend.

Tottenham suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Although Spurs started the North London derby well and came from a goal down to go 2-1 up, Pochettino’s side eventually went down 4-2.

Former Newcastle United striker Shearer, who now works a pundit for BBC Sport, has criticised Tottenham manager Pochettino for not including star defender Toby Alderweireld in the starting lineup.

Juan Foyth started instead, and the 20-year-old Argentine centre-back was directly responsible for one of the goals that Tottenham conceded and had a disappointing game overall.

Shearer wrote in The Sun: “I just could not understand why Toby Alderweireld did not play in what was Spurs’ biggest game of the season so far.

“It was bizarre and a huge surprise. Whether he was trying to make a statement because Alderweireld’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has not signed a new one, I do not know.”

Moving on

Alderweireld is one of the best central defenders in the world, and Tottenham manager Pochettino should have included the Belgium international in the starting lineup against Arsenal.

However, that is now in the past, and Tottenham have to move on from their North London derby disappointment and have to start planning ahead.
