Alan Shearer believes not many Tottenham Hotspur players deserve to be on more money.

Alan Shearer has told BBC’s Match of the Day program on Sunday that not many of Tottenham Hotspur players deserve big-money contracts.

The subject of Tottenham’s wage cap has been thrusted into the spotlight over the past week following an explosive interview by Danny Rose in which he suggested that he was unhappy with his £65,000-a-week contract, which he only signed in December.

Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris are Spurs’ highest earners, with the duo earning around £120,000-a-week according to The Mirror.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been Leicester and Chelsea’s closest rivals for the Premier League title over the past two seasons, though their challenge has fizzled out on both occasions.

The Lilywhites were also group-stage casualties in the Champions League last season and although many Tottenham players have big profiles, Alan Shearer does not believe that their on-the-pitch achievements merit lucrative deals.

He told BBC’s Match of the Day program: “Two years ago they had a great chance to win the league – they didn’t, they capitulated in the last month.

“Last year they had a great chance to win the league – I understand there’s been progression – but these players haven’t won anything. These players nosedived in the Champions League. Also a lot of them nosedived with England last summer.

“So at the minute I can’t see how too many of them can they say they deserve more money.”
