The Magpies legend is unsure whether rumours suggesting the club may be taken over are true, likening the reports to “Groundhog Day”.
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted that he “can’t get excited” any more about rumours of a potential club takeover as he’s “heard it all before”.
Earlier this week, Magpies owner Mike Ashley went on Sky News and said he was looking to sell the club before the January transfer window.
In addition, he also claimed that talks regarding a takeover of the Premier League outfit are at a “more progressed stage” than ever.
Around 12 months ago, the Sports Direct owner was reportedly in talks with businesswoman Amanda Staveley over a potential £300m deal – according to BBC Sport – but nothing materialised.
The individual linked with a Newcastle takeover at present – as per Sky News – is Peter Kenyon, the former chief executive of Premier League football clubs Manchester United and Chelsea.
Despite the apparent progress made behind the scenes on Tyneside, Shearer remains cautious – and perhaps a tad pessimistic.
“I can’t get excited at all about the potential takeover at Newcastle,” he told Coral. “We have been there before and heard it all before.
“It seems that these rumours always resurface around the January transfer window and it’s a bit like Groundhog Day to be honest.
“That said, it is definitely much needed so I hope that this time there does end up being more substance behind the rumours.”
Newcastle host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, where a planned boycott has been cancelled by the Toon Army due to the takeover speculation.
The Magpies currently sit 14th in the Premier League at present, four points clear of the drop zone but hoping to return to form having picked up just one point from their last two games.
