Alan Shearer has suggested on Coral.co.uk that it will be a disaster if Rafael Benitez leaves Newcastle United.

The Newcastle legend has suggested that if Benitez is not given funds by club owner Mike Ashley to sign players in the January transfer window, then the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss will consider his future at St. James’ Park.

Shearer wrote on Coral.co.uk: “It doesn’t look like the Newcastle takeover will happen. If it is off then that is very disappointing and if Mike Ashley doesn’t invest some money now in this transfer window it is going to be a very tough battle for survival in the Premier League.

“This will again raise question marks over Rafa Benitez’s future. We don’t know what promises he has been given but I really do feel that if transfer funds aren’t made available then Rafa will quite rightly be considering his future at Newcastle United.

“That would be a disaster in my opinion. They are in a relegation battle and it was always going to be a long hard season which is why they need to free up some funds and give them the best opportunity to stay up with Rafa in charge.”

Newcastle have a decent team, but it is clear that the Magpies need to sign players in the January transfer window.

What the Magpies need more than anything else is a striker – a proven goalscorer who can score 10 to 15 goals in the Premier League in the second half of the season.

Benitez is a very good manager, and the Spaniard has done well with the resources he has got at Newcastle so far.

Even if Newcastle sign players, they will still be in a relegation fight until the final weeks of the campaign, but at least there will more optimistic and fight among the players and the fans.
