But the referee did not give the penalty, instead instructing the corner be taking again.
Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen in action
Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer was certainly not impressed.
Speaking on Twitter the Newcastle United legend made his feelings clear, stating:
Vertonghen was certainly very lucky to get away with the decision, especially considering the decisions in the game between Stoke City and Manchester City last week – when Ryan Shawcross and Raheem Sterling both gave away spot-kicks.
Spurs’ Belgian defender will no doubt be having to keep an eye on these antics when he is in the penalty area.
He got away with one today, next time the referee might just point to the spot.
