Harry Kane drew a blank in Tottenham’s win over Newcastle.
Alan Shearer has suggested on BBC Sport’s Facebook page that Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane will be “devastated” about missing big chances on Sunday.
Tottenham kicked off their Premier League season with a 2-0 win at 10-man Newcastle United, who had Jonjo Shelvey sent off before both goals.
Dele Alli, the victim of an alleged stamp by the Magpies captain, opened the scoring on 61 minutes, before Ben Davies killed off the game as a contest shortly after.
Kane, the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner over the past two seasons, started and finished the game but endured a frustrating afternoon after missing two chances which he normally converts with ease.
And although Shearer claims the 23-year-old will be happy with the result, the Newcastle icon says that the Spurs marksman will be bitterly disappointed not to be among the goals.
He said on BBC Sport’s Facebook page: “He had chances today, very good chances, two in particular: one, the keeper saved and one he put on to the post.
“He’ll be delighted with the three points but he’ll be devastated with missing the chances because as a centre-forward you are just desperate to get off to a good start.”
Shearer is probably right. The best strikers around are often the greediest and he will be disappointed on some level that he couldn’t get off the mark at the first time of asking.
Nevertheless, Kane, who hit 29 goals in the Premier League last season, will brush off the disappointment and few would back against him winning the top goalscorer gong for the third season running come May.
