Alan Shearer has been discussing Manchester United as the club and Jose Mourinho come in for criticism from all quarters.
Manchester United are having a tough time of it at the moment and in particular manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese has made headlines for all the wrong reasons with his now infamous press conference rants since the Red Devils were dumped out of the Champions League by Sevilla.
Mourinho has since switched his attentions to publicly criticising left back Luke Shaw, which has sparked national debate.
Many feel it is a tactic by Mourinho to deflect attention away from United’s Champions League failure while simultaneously giving Shaw a final warning over his future at the club.
The public criticism has seen Mourinho accused of being a bully and some have even suggested it could be the beginning of the end for the former Chelsea boss at Old Trafford.
But Premier League legend Alan Shearer told Coral that Manchester United are reaping what they sowed with Mourinho, who he has criticised for his comments on Shaw.
“If they finish second, which it looks as though they’ve got every chance of doing that, and winning the FA Cup then from where they finished last season in the league to where they can finish this season and delivering another trophy you have to think that would be a successful season for them,” Shearer told Coral.
“They knew what they were getting with Jose Mourinho he hasn’t changed a lot, albeit he seems to be a little bit angrier nowadays than when he first arrived in the Premier League, there’s less of a smile on his face nowadays more of a frown and he’s having to answer back to a lot of people.
“He’s criticised his players in public in particular Luke Shaw again, it seems he has no future at Old Trafford.
“My only concern with that if that was me being constantly criticised in public I wouldn’t like it and also of course he’s devaluing the player and his transfer value come the summer will decrease because teams know that Man United want to get rid of him and Jose doesn’t want him anymore.
“We don’t know what goes on behind closed doors or what Jose has said to him but in the main I don’t think its necessarily right to criticise your players in public.
“You know when you hire him more often than not you’re going to get trophies, you know you’re going to have rows and ups and downs along the way but in the main he delivers and he delivers trophies.”
It will be interesting to see what Manchester United fans make of Shearer’s assessment given how much the former Real Madrid manager divides opinion at the club.
For many supporters Manchester United simply must play a certain brand of football while competing on all fronts and feel they should not have to choose one or the other.
