Alan Shearer has discussed how deeply engrained the problems within the England set-up really are.
Alan Shearer believes he could help England
BBC Pundit Alan Shearer claims he approached the FA five years ago regarding the prospect of him becoming England manager, but was told he wasn’t experienced enough, when speaking on BBC One’s Match of the Day programme.
The Newcastle United legend told the BBC:
Shearer believes England need a new direction
“I went to see the FA four or five years ago, I said ‘I want it, I’ll have that job’, and they looked at me and said ‘no, it’s a lack of experience’. I said, ‘you’ve hired experienced guys and paid them an absolute fortune, I could not have done any worse than those guys’.”
Shearer was speaking after the Three Lions’ shambolic display saw them exit another major tournament in a disappointing manner. Their performance was completely and utterly devoid of any passion, spirit or tenacity. As is the case in business as well as sport, poor performance usually stems from the top, and Roy Hodgson must be held accountable for the disgraceful way in which England bowed out.
Would England benefit from Shearer’s experience?
Quite how the FA thought Shearer was not up for the job but Hodgson was is a total farce, and goes someway towards highlighting the attitude within the archaic organisation.
The former England star went on to say he would still be willing to offer his help to the national setup:
“I would offer my tournament experience. Even if Gareth Southgate got it. For him to take players in with experience who have been there and done it, that has to be a benefit also.”
One thing is for sure, after so many failed appointments, the next one the FA makes must be the right one.
Roy Hodgson failed miserably in his role as England manager
