Alan Shearer has included Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier in his Premier League Team of the Week after is rock-solid performance in a 2-0 win over Chelsea – in which the England star also notched an assist for Harry Kane’s effort.

Spurs came into the game having gone eight games against Chelsea without winning. But, given Chelsea’s woes under Graham Potter, and boasting home advantage – Spurs were favourites. They duly delivered and Dier was excellent.

The England World Cup defender has been up and down during Antonio Conte’s tenure. Impressing when the Italian was first hired and breaking his way back into the Three Lions set up, his form dipped. But, on Sunday, he was superb.

WhoScored report that he made three tackles, six clearances, completed 41 of 46 passes and flicked on Son Heung-min’s corner to Kane to get Tottenham’s second. So, a wonderful display from Dier – and Shearer was very impressed.

“Didn’t put a foot wrong at the back and flicked on for Harry Kane for Tottenham Hotspur‘s second goal in the 2-0 victory against Chelsea,” Shearer said about Dier, including the Spurs ace in his Premier League Team of the Week.

While Chelsea offered very little going forward despite starting with star players such as Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Hakim Ziyech and even bringing on the likes of Mason Mount, Mykhaylo Mudryk and more – Dier was inch-perfect.

The £92k-a-week star did not make a mistake and it is needed. With Fraser Forster behind him, Spurs need Dier to step up in the second half of the season as they pursue a place in the top four. Dier’s form is just as important as Kane.

If he can produce the kind of performances he did against Chelsea on Sunday – week in, week out, then Spurs will give themselves the platform to finish in the top four. Even perhaps, be among the names for the FA Cup trophy.
