Former Newcastle United striker and BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has been criticising the attacking talents of Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
Spurs failed to win for the fifth straight game and only managed to score against Leicester City yesterday with a Vincent Janssen penalty.
They are struggling to score goals in recent games and that has seen them draw against West Brom, Bournemouth and the Foxes in their last three Premier League outings – along with a draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and an EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool.
Shearer, speaking on Match of the Day, believes they are attacking too narrow and with much less pace than they did last season. He stated:
“Defensively very good, best in the league. What they did last season was they stretched teams a little bit more. I don’t think they’re doing that and the pace in the final third is not as sharp as it could be and should be.

“At times you could throw a blanket over the front four. They’re playing very narrow and not stretching teams as they did last year.
“It was slow, it was ponderous. No options. That’s them (Leicester) defending far too easily. They need to get the sharpness back in their game and ask questions of the back four.”
In fairness, against Leicester they were lacking Erik Lamela who pulled out late because of illness. The Argentine often brings more width to the Spurs team. Moussa Sissoko was also suspended and his dynamism could have been useful in this tie.
But there is no doubt that Spurs are struggling to be fluid in their attacking play and that will need to improve if they are to have any chance of pushing for the Premier League title again.
